Personal Small Business Corporate & Institutional About Us
In the United States, about 69% of elementary school children qualify for federal free or reduced lunches. That’s about 16 million children across the country facing daily food insecurity.
Teachers know these children eat breakfast and lunch at school, but on the weekends they’re at risk of maybe not having enough food to eat.
That’s where Blessings in a Backpack comes in. The non-profit organization provides food-filled backpacks to school children ages K-5 each Friday to take home over the weekend. By having guaranteed, nutritious meals on Saturday and Sunday, the children come back to school on Monday nourished and ready to learn.
During the Father/Son Challenge tournament week, volunteers get together at The Ritz Carlton Golf Club, Orlando to stuff backpacks, which are then delivered to the Callahan Center.
The Callahan Center is a neighborhood organization in Orlando that provides after school academic programs and extracurricular activities for school-aged children such as lacrosse, karate and piano.
“PNC agreed to feed 80 children over three years at the Callahan Center. That’s 3,040 hunger free weekends the kids there won’t have to worry about,” said Kevin Bean, CFO for Blessings in a Backpack. “We couldn’t do what we do without help from organizations like PNC.”
“There’s obviously a number of places to put your time, effort and resources, said Rich Stevens, assistant vice chair for the Blessings in a Backpack board of directors. “PNC’s commitment to a charity of this nature where you’re serving kids is reflective of how much concern there is for the community and how important it is for the bank to be in touch with those values.”
