The MLA, part of the PNC Grow Up Great initiative, is a traveling exhibit that provides an opportunity for parents and caregivers to learn about the importance of early childhood education while they engage in fun activities with their kids. Complete with bright orange tents, the MLA sets up camp at community festivals and events. In 2016, the exhibits toured 34 markets in 16 states and the District of Columbia, had 178 event days and logged more than 29,000 miles.
One of the MLA highlights is the “When I Grow Up” station, where kids dress up as different professionals and have their photographs superimposed on appropriate backgrounds. Science takes center stage in the craft area, where little ones create colorful butterfly and panda masks while learning about the biology of both species. Vocabulary-building becomes a fun challenge with the Word of the Day activity. The new word is repeated throughout the event, giving children an opportunity to use it in different contexts.
The learning adventure continues even when it’s time to go. Families with children under the age of 5 take home a free “Happy, Healthy, Ready for School: Math is Everywhere” multimedia kit created by Sesame Workshop, plus other educational materials.
