The PNC Christmas Price Index®

Start off the 12 Days of Christmas right with this D.I.Y. Partridge in a Pear Tree sculpture—made entirely out of paper!

Day 1: Partridge in a Pear Tree Paper Sculpture

  • Terra Cotta pot
  • Scissors
  • 1 container of waterbase sealer, glue, and finish
  • Craft brush
  • Woodgrain-Patterned Scrapbook Paper
  • Brown Kraft Paper
  • Stapler
  • Clear Tape
  • Green Kraft Paper (Look for different shades and textures.)
  • Green Ink Pads (Look for different shades.)
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Faux Moss
  • Colorful Pack of Kraft Paper
  • Printout of a Partridge

  1. Cut woodgrain paper into strips and apply to terra cotta pot using the waterbase sealer, glue, and finish.
  2. Cut long pieces of brown kraft paper and twist to make branches. For the “trunk” of the tree, add strips of paper to one branch until it’s as thick as you’d like. Make sure it’s strong enough to hold the branches, leaves and pears.
  3. Tape the trunk to the inside of the pot. Use a stapler or tape to add branches to the trunk. Add smaller branches to the larger branches.
  4. Cut leaf shapes out of the green craft paper. Dab the leaves on the ink pads to create a realistic texture. Cut pear shapes out of bright yellow-green paper.
  5. Bend the edges of all the cutouts so they take on a 3-dimensional leaf shape. Use the glue gun to glue the pears on to the branches and glue the leaves around the pears. Fill in any gaps or holes with faux moss.
  6. Print out a picture of a partridge for reference and trace it on dark brown kraft paper. Cut out the shapes you see on the partridge in the different kraft paper colors, and glue them to your brown cutout.
  7. Add the partridge to the tree!

Tips & Tricks

  • Don’t worry if your strips of woodgrain paper don’t line up perfectly. It will look great once it’s dry.
  • Cut out more leaves than you think you’ll need. You’ll use a lot!
