Day 7: Swan-Shaped Succulent Planter

  • Teacup
  • Air-Dry Sculpting Clay (4-ounce bag)
  • 2 Quart-Size Plastic Zip-Top Bags
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Succulents (faux or real)

  1. Break off a chunk of modeling clay, knead until soft, and roll it into a log shape. Line the log up with the teacup and bend into a swan neck.
  2. Pinch the front to form the bill. Attach a small ball of clay where the bill meets the head for the iconic swan “knob.” Roll out two very small balls and add them as eyes to either side of the head.
  3. Press the head and neck piece against the teacup. To keep the neck from bending too much as it dries, roll up two plastic zip-top bags and tuck them inside the neck curve.
  4. Roll three small logs of clay in graduated sizes. Line them up against each other and pinch the tips together to form the wing. Press the wing down to flatten. Repeat to make the second wing.
  5. Use packing tape to help the wings dry against the teacup. Allow the swan to dry in a warm place for 24-48 hours.
  6. Remove the plastic zip-top bags from under the neck and prop the head up as it dries further. Let rest for another 24-48 hours.
  7. Remove the clay pieces and tape from the teacup. Spread hot glue on the inside of the wings and the back of the neck, then adhere to the teacup.
  8. Add a handful of gravel to the bottom of the teacup for drainage, then add potting soil and a live plant.

Tips & Tricks

  • Do an internet image search for swans as a reference when you’re sculpting.
  • Check the swan as it’s drying to make sure all the pieces are still in place.
  • If you don’t have a green thumb, use fake succulents from a craft store.
