Video: Look Inside a Tiny Bank

PNC’s portable branch delivers technology and advice in a little space.

What are the chances an 8x20 foot storage container is a place to go for money or financial advice?

The chances are very good when the steel box is built into a tiny branch by PNC Bank and delivered by flatbed truck to a popular spot. This includes the West Virginia University campus in Morgantown, W.Va., in August 2016. Previous locations included a park in Chicago, an open-air mall in Atlanta and next to an arts center in downtown Charlotte.

As people rely more on their smartphones and computers, they expect services to be available when, where and how they choose. PNC customers use mobile apps, for example, for deposits and payments. PNC’s pop-up branch is portable and shifts the emphasis from teller lines and transactions to technology and in-depth conversations with consultants carrying iPads.

At Your Service

PNC's tiny branch fits plenty in a small space:

  • Consultant: uses iPad to demonstrate services; opens new accounts; helps with loans and makes referrals for investments, home loans, auto loans and more.
  • DepositEasy ATM: cashes checks; deposits of stacks of checks or cash; dispenses cash, including $1 bills.
