Spring Cleaning: Your House

It’s spring - time to open the doors and windows to let the stuffy air out and the fresh air in. From doable decluttering, to quick cleaning tips, to touching up that curb appeal, spring is the perfect season to make your home shine inside and out.

Don’t love it? Ditch it.

Decluttering is less about saying goodbye and more about saying hello to a space filled with happiness. Help simplify this seemingly-daunting process by cleaning out one area of your home at a time, such as a closet or set of bookshelves. Start by taking everything (yes, everything!) out of its place and begin sorting them on the floor. Make a spot for trash, donate, sell or keep – and place every item in one of those piles.

When you’re done, take out the trash, put the donate bag in your car and post the sell items online. Then, revel in giving your favorite remaining things the space and adoration they deserve. Follow this method as you move to the next area and you’ll be organized and filled with a sense of accomplishment in no time.

Cleaning inside?

Spring cleaning is more than just tidying up and wiping down. It’s the time to tackle bigger projects and get into those nooks and crannies for a thorough, deep clean – one that will make the whole house feel lighter, brighter and ready for spring.

Clean the inside and outside with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. Newspaper works just as well as paper towels to clean dirty windows.

Take them outside to give them a good shake and thorough wipe-down. Let them dry fully before bringing them back in.

If you don’t vacuum your curtains regularly with the soft brush attachment, now is a great time to do so. You can also check the washing instructions or simply air them out in the sun for a few hours.

Dry brush the dust off, follow up with a warm, soapy washcloth (or sponge or sock), then grab some cotton swabs to use in those hard-to-clean corners.

Hardwood floors.

Dip the mop into a bucket of your floor’s recommended cleaning solution or simply use a ¼ cup mild soap, such as dishwashing liquid, and water. Wring it out completely, then mop in the direction of the wood grain. Go over the floor with clean water to rinse and give it ample time to dry.

Start from the top of the room and go down. Dust ceiling fans and window casings. Then, take everything off the shelves and wipe them and your keepsakes with a soft, clean cloth. Get out the vacuum and enjoy kicking all that winter dust to the curb!

No time? No worries. Hire a pro to do a deep clean.

Freshening up outside?

Your green grass isn’t the only thing that fades in the winter. The outside of your house can take a hit as well. Here are some suggestions, ranging from quick projects to ones that require a little more work, to help you step up your home’s curb appeal.

1.    Ditch the old welcome mat for a brand new one.

2.    Sweep the porch and walkway.

3.    Plant some annuals for a touch of color.

4.    Make sure your screens are in good shape.

5.    Pressure wash the outside of your home.

6.    Give your front door a fresh coat of paint. Even try a new color!

7.    How do your gutters look? Clean them if necessary.

Embrace the change in seasons. Enjoy your freshly decluttered and scrubbed home. Let the warm breeze lure you to your yard. And get ready for a springtime full of family, friends and fun in your bright, shiny, clean home.
