5 Ways to Boost Office Morale

Here’s how to build team spirit among your staff.

A dental practice can be a high-stress environment. Given that the stakes are so high and the hours are long, how can you improve staff morale? Try the following.

  1. Foster a collaborative environment. While not everyone has to have a say in every decision, finding ways to include everyone in at least part of the decision-making process can make a difference. Giving your staff the power to make decisions within their areas of expertise can help them feel empowered.[1]

  2. Offer flexible work arrangements if you can. Up to 80% of employees have indicated that they would appreciate more flexible work options.[2] If your staff is among this group, show that you understand, and respond to their needs by offering job shares or the possibility of working from home (if and when this works for your practice). Having a work schedule that offers employees more flexibility can go a long way in making them happier in their work.

  3. Show your appreciation. Be assured, it makes a significant difference to your staff.[3] You can express appreciation in many different ways, from a bonus day off to a gift certificate to a letter or note articulating the ways in which the employee makes a difference.

  4. Help employees move toward their future. Some of your employees may be aiming for a spot further up in the office or organization, while others may be happy where they are. In either case, learn what your employees’ hopes and goals are, and support them as they work toward achieving them.

  5. Connect. Even when your practice is extremely busy, remember to take time to connect with your staff. Learn what they like about the practice, and what they want to improve. Human connection is part of the reason people work together, and it can be a great source of satisfaction.[4] Talking to each member of your staff at least once a week will help them — and maybe you, too.

If you want your practice to be a positive place to work, put in some effort to make it that way. Paying attention to your staff will likely pay you back with a pleasant and harmonious office.
