If you define luxury and escape by world-class views rather then world-class amenities, pitching a tent on a remote beach this season may be the perfect way to leave the cares of your busy practice behind and get reenergized. The best thing about beach camping? The water view is only half the attraction. Depending on where you live and how far you want to travel, you could have swaying palms, ancient forests or snow-capped mountains at your back. Here are five great sites to consider.
Cape Lookout National Seashore, North Carolina
Set up camp on a wide, sandy stretch of beach, then catch dinner amid some of the best fishing on the East Coast. At Cape Lookout, you can camp for up to 14 days with no permits for 14 or fewer people, and park your car right on the beach (though be sure to follow the beach driving guidelines).
Kalaloch Campground, Olympic National Park, Washington
“Kalaloch” translates as “a good place to land,” and thousands of campers each year wholeheartedly agree. Though you can’t actually sleep on the beach, stunning views from the campgrounds on the nearby bluffs provide breathtaking views. Keep an eye out for sea otters, and leave time to explore the lush rainforests, lakes and mountains of Olympic National Park.
Waiʻānapanapa State Park, Maui, Hawaii
Check out Maui’s wild side by camping in this remote state park marked by rugged coastline and rich, black volcanic sand. The beach itself is small, but the natural splendor is abundant, including seabirds, anchialine pools (connected underground to the ocean), caves and forests. The three-mile Ke Ala Loa O Maui/Piilani Trail offers stunning coastal views.
Bahia Honda State Park, Florida
Situated on one of Florida’s exotic keys, this idyllic park features shallow sand flats that attract great blue herons, snowy egrets and many other seabirds. Slip a boat into the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico, watch tropical fish while snorkeling, hop on your bike for a ride along the scenic 3.5-mile paved road or just fall asleep under a palm with a good book.
Ninilchik View Campground, Ninilchik State Recreation Area, Alaska
The word “view” is in the name, and this breathtaking spot in southern Alaska more than lives up to the promise. From your tent, you’ll see the whitecaps of Cook Inlet, as well as two active volcanoes, Mount Iliamna and Mount Redoubt. Some of the world’s most storied salmon runs and razor clamming are right in the neighborhood.
