Women Who Achieve: Peggy Gionta

Partners in Technology and Advocacy

At the height of her success with a large IT consulting firm, Peggy Gionta made the bold decision to trade in her executive sales position for entrepreneurship. As her daughter turned 3, Peggy craved more flexibility. She established Partner’s Consulting as an IT recruitment firm committed to providing employees with exceptional work-life balance.

“I built my company around the principle that professional women shouldn’t have to give up their careers when they have families — that they deserve opportunities to raise their children and advance in their careers simultaneously,” Peggy explains. “I started by bringing together similarly minded women, yet even as we’ve grown into a more gender-diverse staff, our commitment to work-life balance continues.”

Growth, Evolution, More Growth

Within 18 months, Partner's found its stride. Client relationships flourished and the future looked bright. But the 2008 recession abruptly changed the landscape, and demand for full-time placements plunged. Without missing a beat, Peggy shifted her business model to accommodate new market demands.

“It became more attractive for clients to hire project consultants than full-time employees, so we moved to contract placements,” she says. “The recurring revenue proved to be a more sustainable model for us, too.” This model, in tandem with Peggy’s consistent reinvestments into the business, has led to growth averaging 26% annually for more than a decade.

Today Peggy’s multimillion-dollar enterprise matches project leaders and technologists with the large-scale technology initiatives of Fortune 500 and 1000 companies in Pennsylvania, California, Colorado, New Jersey, Delaware and New York.

Supporting Women in STEM

Throughout her company's evolution, Peggy has maintained focus on supporting women in their careers. She serves as an envoy and a mentor for the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), and an active member of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) and Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT). Passionate about encouraging young girls and women to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers, she is also a member, sponsor and advocate of organizations that champion this cause.

“When I was in college, women were earning about 40% of computer and information sciences degrees; that number has dropped to 18%, according to NCWIT [National Center for Women & Information Technology]. As a country, we need to figure out why this is happening and what we can do to fuel positive momentum,” says Peggy. “At Partner's, more than half of our project manager placements are women, and we devote a lot of our volunteer time to programs that build awareness of STEM career opportunities.” Among these efforts was a Career Exploration and Leadership Camp orchestrated by Partner’s, Girls Inc. and WICT, which connected 27 11- to 14-year-old girls with professional media and technology mentors.

A Friend in Need

Peggy looks back on her relationship with PNC as a pivotal building block. Early on, when her previous bank didn't share her vision for an expanding company requiring an expanding line of credit, PNC came to the rescue. “We had already invested our savings and put our house on the line for the company, but ours is a cash-intensive business. PNC understood that. Our banker took the time to review our P&Ls, learn about our business and understand our goals. PNC’s support has enabled us to continue growing organically.”
