Leading Clients to Perfect Balance

Born into an entrepreneurial family, Sue Schnitz always knew she wanted to work for herself. She laid the groundwork for her dream by acquiring experience through positions with two global financial services corporations.

“When you work for a large corporation, you discover what you want for your own business,” Sue shares. “I identified a niche – small businesses and high-net-worth individuals wanting to outsource their accounting and bookkeeping functions – and established Perfect Balance in 1992. As a CPA firm, we’re unusual in that we don’t do tax returns. We focus on back-office support, because we know how critical financial accountability is to running a successful business and filing accurate tax returns.”

Sue started her business at home, working part-time while her three children were young. When her youngest started first grade 17 years ago, she moved into an office space and gave her business full-time attention. Today, Sue and her 11 employees serve the financial needs of more than 200 clients in the Columbus market.

“Helping small businesses grow is extremely gratifying,” says Sue. “I understand – because I share – the entrepreneurial mindset: Once we get to the top of one mountain, we’re looking for the next one to climb. My team and I help business owners climb by offering not only our financial expertise but also the broad perspective we’ve gained by working with hundreds of companies. We share best (and worst) practices to help entrepreneurs create their own success strategies.”

The Power of Referrals

Sue attributes her own business success in large part to the mentorship of her husband and three older brothers, all of whom own businesses. “I learned that providing great customer service and treating employees the way I like to be treated are the foundation of a strong business,” she says.

Her customer base reflects her steadfast commitment to service, as nearly all of Sue’s clients have come to Perfect Balance by referral. “Large CPA firms don’t always offer bookkeeping services,” Sue explains. “Once they realize that we are a collaborative partner, willing to work alongside them toward their clients’ success, they send their clients to us. Our growth has been in response to the steady influx of referrals.”

Recognizing the value of a solid referral, Sue sends many of her clients to PNC for personal and business banking solutions. She says, “PNC has been with us since the start, so we know that they treat small business owners with the utmost care. We refer our clients to PNC for a variety of services – from loans and lines of credit to real estate and wealth management services. Like Perfect Balance, PNC has our clients’ best interests at heart. Together, we offer them extraordinary financial solutions.”
