Worry-Free Banking Tips for Students

Tips for Worry-Free Banking

College brings many new experiences - including the responsibility of managing your money. Here are some easy ways to help you manage your accounts and avoid unnecessary fees.

Know Your Account Balance

  • Keep track of all your transactions - check card purchases, ATM withdrawals or checks you have written. This will help you know how much is actually available in your account.
  • If you check your balance online, make sure you look not only at transactions that are "posted" (already deducted from your account), but also the ones listed as "pending" (made recently, but not yet deducted). Also account for recent transactions or checks you've written that have not yet been presented to your bank.
  • Balance your checking account on a regular basis to make sure your bank records are accurate. Cross reference online banking activity with your own paper trail of check card receipts, ATM receipts and your check copies or registry.

Avoid Overdrawing Your Account - Don't withdraw more than you have available

  • Be aware that your available account balance shown at an ATM may not reflect recent transactions or checks that you've written.
  • Remember that check card purchases may still go through, even if you don't have sufficient funds. Since the bank may not know about other pending payments such as checks that you've written, you may become overdrawn even if the purchase goes through.
  • Understand the fees associated with overdrawing your account and how much they can be. It can really add up!

Stay Ahead of Your Money, Online and On The Go

PNC Bank offers convenient solutions that help you manage your money from anywhere, anytime.

  • Free Alerts: Sign up to receive email notifications alerting you to account activity. For example, you can pre-select a balance threshold and receive an alert when the balance goes below that amount, so you know when you're getting down too low on an account.
  • Free Mobile Banking1: Manage your money from the palm of your hand - by phone or PDA. Check your available balance, review recent expenditures and transactions, and even text account information requests.
  • Free Online Banking2: Check on balances, account activity, and manage it all when it's convenient for you.
  • Overdraft Protection: Link your account to another "protecting" account so funds are automatically transferred from the protecting account to cover your purchases, in case you accidentally overdraw.
