Dr. Mary Lou Luebbe-Gearhart
"I have confidence in my PNC team because they make banking easy and look out for me the same way I look out for my patients. PNC understands that real success is about building personal relationships."
The Business of Transforming Lives
Dr. Mary Lou Luebbe-Gearhart envisioned her career path early in life when she realized she held the potential to change people's lives in a very meaningful way. Perched atop her father's shoulders in his audiology office, she caught a glimpse of a patient, a hulking World War II veteran, with tears streaming down his cheeks.
"Why is he crying?" she recalls asking Dr. Albert Luebbe, the audiology pioneer who established Luebbe Hearing in 1946. "He is joyful," her father explained with a smile. "He lost his hearing in the war, and we just gave it back to him."
This defining moment led to Dr. Mary Lou's lifelong commitment to improving lives through audiology. She took over her father's practice, Luebbe Hearing Services, in 1973, while she was a student at The Ohio State University (she later earned her Doctor of Audiology - Au.D - from the University of Florida). Dr. Mary Lou has since grown Luebbe Hearing into a renowned practice with three Central Ohio-based offices attracting patients from around the world. Ninety percent of the practice's business comes from referrals and word of mouth.
"We've built our reputation on the personal care we provide and our specialization in state-of-the-art digital hearing aids," says Dr. Mary Lou, who, along with her staff of 11, is committed to staying on the cutting edge of technology. She leverages her high-tech expertise not only at Luebbe Hearing but also as a People to People International Trustee. In that capacity, she helps hearing-impaired children around the world and actively shares her knowledge and resources with audiologists in developing countries.
Dr. Mary Lou is a big believer in mentoring back at home as well, where she advises graduate and doctoral audiology students, most of whom are young women. "My goal is to help create good entrepreneurs and clinicians," she says. "These bright students learn a lot each day and strive to live up to my confidence in them." She is also a charter member of the Women Presidents' Organization (WPO), a peer-to-peer mentoring organization for higher revenue-generating female-owned companies.
Dr. Mary Lou discovered the value of having a strong bank behind her business during her high school years when her father hired her to take over his business checking account and other banking activities.
"Once I took the reins of Luebbe Hearing, I turned to PNC for even more services," Dr. Mary Lou explains. "PNC financing has helped us purchase new diagnostic equipment, market new products and more. I have confidence in my PNC team because they make banking easy and look out for me the same way I look out for my patients. PNC understands that real success is about building personal relationships."
That's how Dr. Mary Lou defines success as well. She explains: "Helen Keller said, 'When you lose your vision, you lose things; when you lose your hearing, you lose people.' That sentiment inspires a relentless drive in me to discover the right solution for each and every patient."
