Lynn Mustazza
President/CEO
Jawood LLC

"I need a bank that will grow with me and advisors who are bright and forward-thinking. That's why I'm moving to PNC. I'm counting on them for proactive ideas and innovative solutions."

Jawood: On a Mission to Succeed

Letting go of the idea that "having it all" meant doing it all on her own empowered Lynn Mustazza to succeed beyond her expectations. A full-time mom and the principal of staffing and recruitment agency Galt Personnel from 1984 to 1989, Lynn had been finding it increasingly difficult to juggle the demands of business and family. So when she was approached in 1989 by former Blue Cross and Blue Shield professionals to begin a healthcare staffing firm, Lynn kept an open mind. This team had healthcare expertise, after all, and she had the industry licensing and experience.

The deal was inked, and today, although Lynn's five partners have since retired, Jawood LLC is a $40 million business and one of Metro Detroit's fastest-growing organizations. The company offers healthcare information technology staffing and consulting primarily to health insurance companies. Its name was inspired by The Blues Brothers, Jake and Elwood, a reference to the firm's expertise in the Blue Plans (Blue Cross and Blue Shield).

"We're growing quickly because we're very good at recruiting and developing the best healthcare IT talent," Lynn explains. "We have about 400 employees at any given time, and 90 percent of them are on projects. When they're not on projects, we're cross-training them. Our clients know that they're getting the expertise and reliability they need. They invite us to many of the same projects our $10 billion competitors are involved in."

As corporations become more focused on supplier diversity, Jawood's WBE certification helps bring the firm to the table as well, Lynn reports.

Nurturing a Growth-Oriented Culture

Lynn has always recognized the value of surrounding herself with sharp, knowledgeable professionals - whether her employees, business partners or advisors. So when she began the search for a new banking team, her standards were high.

"The local bank I'd been using for 20 years still thinks of Jawood as a small business, but we're advancing into the middle-market segment," says Lynn. "I need a bank that will grow with me and advisors who are bright and forward-thinking. That's why I moved to PNC. I'm counting on them for proactive ideas and innovative solutions."

As Jawood continues to grow, Lynn plans to maintain her hands-on approach to management. "We consider ourselves the Jerry Maguire of healthcare IT," she says. "We are agents and advocates of our employees from the moment they join our team. Every person counts, and they all know that they can call on anyone, from their direct supervisor to me, any time they have a concern. We value their talent, and they value the confidence we place in them. That relationship gives us the winning edge."
