Margaret "Peg" Tobin, RN
President and CEO
Tobin & Associates

"PNC has been a steadfast resource and advisor. My PNC team regularly introduces us to new solutions that help us optimize our efficiency and profitability."

A Passion for People

By title, Peg Tobin is president and CEO of Tobin & Associates, a healthcare recruitment firm specializing in placing long-term care (LTC) executives. But by nature, Peg is a teacher, mentor and trusted advisor.

Beginning her career as a teacher of high-school students with learning disabilities, Peg discovered her passion for helping others early on. She explored a new dimension of this passion when she became a registered nurse (RN) at the age of 40. Within three months of landing her first hospital position, Peg was tapped to become a manager.

"I hesitated, thinking that I barely knew the procedures, but then I realized that this was my opportunity to multiply the good I could do for patients by getting others as excited about helping them as I was," she says. "I also knew that if I wanted to grow professionally, I needed to help others grow. The best managers mentor their own replacements."

From that moment forward, Peg taught nurses how to provide extraordinary care. Then she taught administrators how to develop outstanding teams of caregivers. By the time she joined the staff of Tobin & Associates predecessor Geri-Nurse in 1998, she was well-prepared. "Success in long-term care means loving what you do," she says. "When I see passion in a candidate, I fight hard to get that person into the right spot. Patients deserve the best care, and we help make sure they get it."

A Head for Business

Geri-Nurse had been struggling for some time, but Peg began turning the business around in her first three months there. The appreciative owner offered her the opportunity to purchase it. "My husband, a longtime healthcare executive, and I gambled everything we had on this business," shares Peg. "We figured if it didn't work out, we still had our professional credentials to fall back on."

But there would be no falling back. Peg recognized the limitations of Geri-Nurse, which had focused on placing RNs, LPNs [licensed practical nurses] and CNAs [certified nursing assistants]. If she could shift the focus to placing LTC executive professionals, certification and licensing responsibilities would fall onto the candidates rather than onto her company, freeing her to grow the business. She changed the business model, took Tobin & Associates national in 1998 and became a trusted name in recruitment across the nation.

Today, Tobin & Associates thrives, and Peg continues to support others' success. She is authoring a book, "Delegate or Suffocate," for nursing directors; delivering motivational presentations to women's groups; and investing in startup companies through Conceptual Beginnings Ltd., a business she established in 2006. She also continues to teach nursing administration through several state healthcare associations. "God has a purpose for everyone, and I'm committed to helping them discover that purpose and make their dreams reality," she says.

Just as she believes in others, Peg says PNC has believed in her. "From offering me a loan to buy the business to the everyday financial support they deliver today, PNC has been a steadfast resource and advisor," she says. "My PNC team regularly introduces us to new solutions that help us optimize our efficiency and profitability. They make us feel like family, standing by us through thick and thin, and believing in us every step of the way. We think the world of our banking team."
