Making purchases with your card
Where can I make purchases with my PNC SmartAccess Card?
You can make purchases at the millions of places that accept Visa debit cards.
How do I make a purchase with my card?
You may pay for purchases, either by signature or by PIN, anywhere Visa debit cards are accepted. For signature transactions, choose the "credit" payment option and sign the receipt; for PIN transactions, choose the "debit" payment option and enter your PIN. Please note that not all merchants will be able to accept both signature and PIN transactions.
How do I request cash back with my purchase?
If you wish to get cash back when making a purchase, swipe your card and push the "debit" button, select the cash back amount you want from the screen options, enter your PIN, and then take your cash and receipt. Please note that some merchants may charge a fee for cash back transactions.
Should I press "debit" or "credit" at the checkout?
For signature transactions, choose the "credit" payment option and sign the receipt. For PIN transactions, choose the "debit" payment option and enter your PIN. If you want to get cash back with your purchase, you will need to select "debit". Please note that not all merchants will be able to accept both signature and PIN transactions.
Is there a fee for making purchases with the card?
No, there is no fee for making purchases. However, a fee for foreign transactions may apply. See Schedule of Fees for complete details.
What are the advantages of using a PNC SmartAccess Card over paying with cash?
You can use your card to shop online and over the phone. If your card (or its number) is ever lost or stolen, your money will be replaced if you notify us promptly of any unauthorized use. Please refer to the PNC SmartAccess Terms and Conditions for complete information. Additionally, with your PNC SmartAccess Card, it's easier to budget your money and track your spending.
Is there a daily limit to how much I can spend with my card?
Yes. You can spend up to your available balance, with a maximum of $2,500 per day for point-of-sale purchases. This is the combined total daily spend limit for both primary and secondary cards.
What if I want to make a purchase that is greater than what I have on my card?
Tell the merchant up-front and request to pay the balance with another method of payment. If you try to purchase an item of greater value than your available card balance, your card may be declined. Please note that some merchants participate in a partial authorization service which means that an approval may be received for the available balance on your card (portion of the original amount requested), in which case, the merchant will ask you to use another form of payment such as cash, check, or credit card to cover the difference.
What about overdraft fees?
We do not charge any overdraft fees, so you never have to worry about them.
Are there any transactions that will put a "hold" on my funds?
Certain types of merchants, such as restaurants, gas stations, car rental agencies, taxis, beauty and barber shops, health and beauty spas and hotels obtain an authorization for an amount which may exceed the actual amount of your purchase. These transactions may cause an "authorization" or a "hold" on your available balance until the completion of the purchase or transaction, or until the expiration of the time period set by us for authorization. Please be sure to check your available balance before making any transaction.
