According to the College Board, the total cost of a four-year private college education today averages just under $200,000; assuming costs rise by 3% a year, that number will swell to $340,000 by 2044, when a child born today enrolls as a freshman.

When it comes to covering education expenses, one option is to borrow the money using student loans.

Of the various education savings vehicles available today, perhaps the best-known is the 529 College Savings Plan (529 Plan). And while no investment is 100% risk-free, and PNC Wealth Management does not guarantee the performance of any investment, there are a number of advantages to 529 Plans, including:

  • Your money accumulates federal tax-free. While contributions to a 529 Plan are subject to federal income tax, the earnings on the money are not when used for qualified education expenses, enabling your assets to grow faster than taxable investments.
  • No taxes on distributions. Any money you withdraw from a 529 Plan is tax-exempt as long as it goes toward qualified education expenses, which can include tuition, room and board, books, computers, lab fees, qualified costs associated with certain apprenticeships, student loan repayments, and certain costs associated with elementary and secondary education.
  • State tax breaks. Many states allow you to deduct your contributions from state income tax.
  • Superior flexibility. Anyone can contribute to a 529 Plan — parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, even friends—and the money can be used at nearly any higher education institution in the world.
  • Generous contribution limits. Contribution limits vary by state, with some states allowing more than $600,000 in total contributions, which means you can accumulate most or all of the cost of a four-year education.
  • You’re in control. The account owner — not the beneficiary — decides when to take distributions, how much to take, and how the money is used (remember, distributions will be tax free if used for qualified education expenses).
  • Money remains accessible. If you need the money in the event of an emergency or financial shortfall, you can withdraw the funds and use them as you see fit. Keep in mind that while your contributions aren’t taxed, the earnings on them are, and you’ll be subject to a 10% penalty if not using the funds for qualified education expenses. However, there are a few scenarios where the 10% penalty can be waived, like the beneficiary receiving a scholarship that replaces that money.

Cuentas de custodia: otra manera de ahorrar

If you’re putting money aside for college, you may want to consider opening a custodial account — either instead of or together with a 529 Plan.

As custodian, you have full control of the account and can make withdrawals of any size at any time to cover expenses for the child — not just college, but things like travel, summer camp, music lessons and clothes.

Una advertencia: All transfers into a custodial account are irrevocable. Any money you put in belongs to the beneficiary, who assumes control at age 18 or 21 (this differs by state) and can use the money as he or she chooses.

Saving for college is a major financial responsibility, and starting early can make a meaningful difference. As education costs continue to rise, families who begin saving sooner can benefit from compounding growth and potentially reduce their reliance on student loans and the long‑term interest costs that come with borrowing. Choosing the right savings strategy is just as important as starting early, as different options offer varying levels of tax advantages, flexibility, and control.

529 College Savings Plans are a popular choice due to their tax‑free growth for qualified education expenses, high contribution limits, and the account owner’s ability to retain control of the funds. Custodial accounts can also play a role, offering greater spending flexibility but less control once the beneficiary reaches adulthood and fewer tax benefits. Ultimately, the best approach depends on your goals, timeline, and overall financial picture. By planning ahead and reviewing your strategy regularly, you can help position yourself to meet future education costs while staying aligned with your broader financial objectives.
