Hi, I'm Amy Sweet, and I'm the owner of Halcyon Home. Halcyon Home is a home health, hospice and home care company based in Austin, Texas. And we provide care in people's homes. So whether they need nursing care, caregivers, chaplains, social workers, physical therapists, speech therapist, we provide all that care in their homes. Because aging is a complicated and difficult process for both the patient and the family
We support our employees with as much love and hospitality as possible to support them, so that they can support patients and families. I started at 16 as a certified nurse's aide, helping the elderly in their homes and felt so inspired. But I really wanted to make money. And that job doesn't pay very well. And so after I became a physician assistant and my aunt had a life-limiting illness herself with cancer and lost both her legs from blood clots, she needed caregivers.
Most companies weren't able to handle those demands. And so I went out and started hiring people that immediately connected with her, because I knew that she liked rap music and she liked art, and she loved connecting with young artists. And so I found people that wanted to care for others, but also had those similarities and interests. And the care was so much better when you were able to put those two things together.
So I grew my business on that concept of providing care for the whole person, We now have 800 employees and we do over 1100 visits a day and over 200,000 visits a year.
So, that's something that I have struggled with. And I have learned that a lot of women struggle with is being able to ascertain the risk of something. And what is the value of that risk? Because we all get used to having a mortgage and being able to take debt on to build equity in something. But when it comes to your business, you're working so hard to be profitable that sometimes you forget that bringing on debt can help you expand and so many levels. And I think one of the good things about women is we're sometimes a little more risk averse, but it also can be something that is something we need to work on as women is to be able to tolerate more risk and take on more debt, because it is one of the best ways to expand a business
Here are three tips I would have for women in business.
Lead with your heart. Know that some people will wrong you along the way, but if you focus on all the positive impact you're making, it will give you the courage to keep going. No matter what.
Learn to love learning, because the more you learn, the more you can take on any challenge or task and problem that comes your way. So always be learning.
And then be comfortable with risk. Learn how to accept there are some risks in life, but if you don't take them, you won't accomplish anything. So hold yourself accountable to taking risks and making great things happen.
