“Just because it's not your plan,” says Jessica O. Matthews, CEO of Uncharted Power, “it doesn't mean it's not your destiny.”

When Matthews – keynote speaker for this May’s PNC virtual Women in Business Week – invented SOCCKET, a soccer-like ball that generates electricity during play, her objective was to inspire her engineer cousins in Nigeria to solve that nation’s electricity shortage.

It wasn’t her plan to solve it herself.

Yet a decade later, as Matthews’ company transports sidewalks into data centers, creating a world with universal access to smart, sustainable infrastructure turns out to have been Matthews’ destiny.

The pandemic no one planned for has also altered many destinies. In addition to sharing Jessica’s story, this virtual edition of PNC Insights for Women in Business discusses the choices between a career and children that many women were destined to make when schools shut down. Although the pandemic sharpened the focus of the “caregiving crisis,” women have been wrestling with this decision forever, and the conflict will be with us even when the pandemic is over. Our article discusses the financial implications of leaving the workforce and offers some tips for remaining relevant and connected while at home.

On the other hand, if the pandemic provoked you to start your own business or challenged your ability to run your business, our story about how six women entrepreneurs found success during the shutdown may inspire you. If doubling down on a commitment to make the world a better place is part of your pandemic inspired destiny, our Responsible Investing article offers insights we hope you can apply to your portfolio.

I hope this issue is helpful to you. Please share your feedback and let us know if we can connect you with a PNC-Certified Women’s Business Advocate to discuss your finances.
