Credit Card Balance Transfer Support

A guide to support your financial well-being.

What Is a Balance Transfer?

A credit card balance transfer allows you to move all or part of a balance from most non-PNC financial institutions or credit related companies to your PNC credit card account balance.

You can open a new credit card and transfer a balance - or if you already have an existing credit card, you can transfer a balance to that account.

PNC may make promotional balance transfer offers on new or existing credit card accounts. You can learn more about any introductory offers when you apply for a new credit card. If you already have a PNC credit card, you can check for balance transfer offers in your Online Banking Accounts page.

Balance transfers are typically subject to balance transfer fees and interest charges.

What To Consider

Before you transfer a balance, it is important you make sure it is the right choice for you.

You may want to consider the following questions:

  • Does this come with a promotional interest rate? What APR will apply after the promotional period expires?
  • What type of fees will be charged in connection with the balance transfer?
  • Will any prepayment penalties be charged on your account with the other institution?
  • Do you have enough room under your credit limit to complete the balance transfer along with associated fees?
  • Will this balance transfer consolidate multiple sources of debt into one manageable monthly payment?

Make sure you review your account agreement to understand what is considered an eligible balance transfer and all requirements before deciding to transfer a balance.

Complete a Balance Transfer

Gather everything you’ll need before you start:
  • The address of the lender you’d like to transfer a balance from
  • The amount you’re transferring – if it’s the full balance, be sure to use the payoff amount
  • Your full account number from your other lender
  • In certain cases you'll need the CVV code on the back of your PNC credit card.

In the PNC Mobile app:

  1. Select the menu icon (three lines), then select Cards.
  2. Select Card Actions.
  3. Select Transfer a Balance and begin your transfer.

In Online Banking:

  1. Select Cards.
  2. Choose the card you'll be transferring the balance to, then select View Account Actions.
  3. Select Transfer a Balance in the Manage Your Account tile.

You can also complete a balance transfer by using one of the convenience checks provided with your card at account opening or as part of a balance transfer promotion, by visiting a branch, or by calling PNC at 1-800-558-8472 to inquire about transferring a balance.

After You Complete a Balance Transfer

Once you’ve requested a balance transfer, here’s what to expect:

  • Your balance may temporarily appear on both cards until your transfer is processed.
  • Continue to make at least your minimum monthly payment on the account from which you are transferring a balance until you verify that the balance transfer is complete.
  • Refer to your PNC credit card statement for your new account balance and minimum payment due.
  • It will take approximately 10 business days to process and mail a balance transfer check to your other lender – if you requested a balance transfer during a recent application for a PNC credit card, the process may take up to a month.

Balance Transfer FAQs

In PNC Online Banking or the PNC Mobile app, you can review your account, make payments and even establish recurring payments or alerts.

We allocate payments at our discretion – this usually means we apply your payments to lower APRs first, then higher APRs. However, any amount you pay in excess of the minimum payment due will be allocated to balances with higher APRs before balances with lower APRs.

If you’re taking advantage of a balance transfer offer we made to you, you may lose your grace period on new purchases. This is because you must pay your entire balance, including any balance transfer amounts, each month by the due date to avoid interest on new purchases. There is no grace period for balance transfers.

You’re responsible for any remaining balance due with your other lender. Transferring your balance from another account will not automatically close that account. Contact your other lender with any questions about that account or to close the account.

You can transfer balances from most non-PNC financial institutions or credit-related companies.

Note: You cannot request balance transfers to individuals or yourself. Additionally, the following items do not qualify as balance transfers and will not be processed:

  • Requests to transfer a balance from an account at PNC Bank or one of our affiliates
  • Requests to transfer cash between individuals
  • Recurring payments to the same company or financial institution
